Podengos do well with other dogs and children as long as they are socialized with them from puppyhood. Just as importantly, Podengos benefit from mental stimulation as well, and are susceptible to becoming destructive and mischievous of they are bored and left to their own devices. They require a great deal of exercise in order to stay fit and happy. If you live in an apartment in a city, the Podengo might not be the breed for you. Podengos will do best in a rural or suburban home where they have plenty of room to run and a safe, fenced in yard to accommodate their love of the outdoors. They are best suited for owners who have experience with these types of breeds, as they are less domesticated than say, a Golden Retriever or a Pug might be, and require a special type of training and consideration in order to make good companion animals. The Pequeno is a true miniature sighthound. The Pequeno is traditionally hunted in packs like a Beagle. The two larger size Podengos are hunted singly or in pairs in the manner of Greyhounds. It is sent down the rabbit hole to flush the quarry to the waiting coursers. The smallest size called the Pequeno is a warren dog that is often used in concert with the Medio. The middle size Podengo, or Medio, is about 18 inches tall and is used to chase, catch, kill and retrieve rabbits. The largest, about 25 inches at the shoulder, is used mostly for coursing hares. Podengo (meaning running hound) are divided by size. There are three native sight hounds in Portugal, all closely related.
